Research

Most of my research is about the role of science and technology in criminal justice; how they are used, what impact they have and how they are understood. Homicide Investigation and Forensic Science (HIFS) was completed in 2019. This was a three year ethnographic study of how forensic science and related technologies were used to investigate homicide by UK police forces. A detailed analysis of 55 cases in four police forces was carried out. All of the major forensic science providers also contributed to the research. The research methodology included observations and interviews of investigators, scientists, crime scene managers and related roles, as well as analysis of case papers and other documentation.

The project was funded by the Leverhulme Trust and was a collaboration between three universities: South Wales, Northumbria and Strathclyde.
